30 Monster Girls - 06 - Tsuchigumo by Chaos--Child 30 Monster Girls - 06 - Tsuchigumo by Chaos--Child
Decided to do another 30 (insert topic here) challenge, this time it's the monster girl challenge, and rather than do one a day I'm taking my time with this one so they'll pop up a bit sporadically.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

This is Tsuchigumo or Jorogumo, meaning "the binding bride" or "spider woman" If you write the kanji for the later incorrectly it changes the meaning to "spider whore", though this term seems inaccurate as I didn't find any stories of them acting like prostitutes.

A Tsuchigumo is described as being a spider that has lived long enough to gain magical powers. Using said powers it can disguise it's true form as that of a human, All the stories seem to indicate that they all turn themselves into lovely women, suggesting that much like the kitsune the "woman" you see can actually be a male or female creature.

The standard it seems for the Tsuchigumo is that once they have disguised themselves as a woman they will find a semi secluded place and wait for a human (usually male) to show up. The tails vary; some resounding the Tsuchigumo asking individuals to marry them (with often disastrous results) or ask someone to care for their baby which is later discovered to be the spider's egg sack. There are also stories of men falling in love with the Tsuchigumo and slowly die as she drains his life away every time he goes to see her.

The most common however seems to be that the Tsuchigumo will find a safe place to wait and lure a an to sit with her as she plays her Biwa, a Japanese instrument. It is said her playing is so beautiful that the man doesn't notice he's being cocooned until it's too late. Soon after the Tsuchigumo devours it's victim or feeds them to it's young.

There is however another aspect to the Tsuchigumo, a legend tells of a man who was down by a waterfall in Kashikobuch (meaning "clever abyss") and managed to escape the web trap the Tsuchigumo had laid by wrapping it around a stump. After she tore the stump out of the ground and into the water he fled, but as he ran he heard her voice call out, "How clever, how clever!". It seems she was so impressed by his escape and decided to reward humans as a whole; as she is now worshiped there as a a goddess who protects the residence from drowning. There is still a shrine standing there in her honor.

Though most Tsuchigumo hide their true spider body it seems this one has been kind enough to show off her extra bedecked limbs to us. And if one looks carefully you can see her young peeking out from their shelter beneath her kimono.

Interesting fact: Spiders are 10 limbed animals, they have 8 legs for motion and a set of smaller limbs up front that they use like hands (and on occasion extra legs) which makes my Tsuchigumo a 12 limbed creature (with the extra human arms up top.)

This is exquisite and fascinating. I love the red and gold colors.

I actually think of this image when I hear that song "Black Widow" by Iggy Azalea.

It's a great series! The Naga is my favorite, though the details in this one are incredible. Were you going to do any more of these?

Well it's more that they have 8 legs and then 2 arm like limbs. Actually, since I gave her human arms too, she now has 12 limbs XD

Well it wasn't so much that I read it anywhere. I noticed it when I was looking at reference images of spiders.

If you look at this one for example, you'll see that it has the 4 long limbs on each side, but then two smaller ones in front. :)

The suchigumo is one of my favorite yokai. She looks very pretty here. and the leg pieces almost look like fingerguards, which actually were present in Asia during the time of Feudal Japan. So pretty....

This is really quite lovely. I very much apreaciate the story and the history that you provided here with it. Thanks so much for sharing. Your "watermarking" Though I must admit... seems a bit obsessive. - That would be my only negative feed back. This doesn't really seem like a piece that you are selling professionally - perhaps I am wrong. So the fact that you have it water marked - on the bottom on the right - on the left in big bold and then even watermarked by deviant art so that you can ensure that we can -kind of-see your work - but DEFINATELY not print it out - (or really fully see it for that matter to enjoy it) Is distracting at best - almost slightly offensive (as if all we do is get on deviant art to steal each other's work) - and really a huge turn off. I would have continued brousing your art but I'd rather not deal with the chaotic confliction of having to see your pin overs. If you had not pointed out the spiderlings -for example - in your description I would not have seen them at all. All the prints and pin ups and watermarking is just too loud. Reguardless - Its a beautiful piece and I thank you for sharing. -Beautiful-

This is just an awesome piece!!!!!! I love practically everything about it!!!!! Since there is one thing I just don't care for, and that is her facial expression. She looks kinda pissed.....but hey, maybe you were going for that. But still, this is just awesome!!!

pissed? *goes to look* Oh! I see what happened. this picture is much larger in my computer I didn't realize it had been re-sized so much.

What looks like her eyebrows up top there are actually a set of her extra eyes (like he ones underneath them), her eyebrows are hidden under her hair. Her expression is actually a calm peaceful one. Sorry for the confusion. ^^;

I'm dating a Jorogumo. Turns out for them, getting hit in the small of the back while in human form is like their equivalent of a groin attack. They also tend to be afraid of scorpions.

Whenever a male jorogumo disguises himself as a member of a species for which males being larger than females is normal, he'll always look afflicted with dwarfism. Likewise, when a female jorogumo disguises herself as a member of a species for which males being larger that females is normal, she'll look afflicted with gigantism.

since female spiders eat male spiders, it seems likely only females could live long enough to turn into a tsuchigumo.

Also I thought male kitsune took a male human shape, but that may be only in manga…

That's probably true, though who knows? maybe there's one celibate male spider who made it? ;p

That may be the case, all the legends I read said they turned into women regardless of their actual gender, it was because it was much easier to get/do what they wanted if they were a woman, cause guys will apparently do anything for a sexy lady.
